Episode 3: Fishing in One of Canada’s Smallest Towns (Part 2 – Zeballos Lodge)

Day two in Zeballos and we switched gears.

After chasing salmon, it was time to target something with serious attitude — Lingcod. Josh heads out with Reel Obsession owner Adrian O’Connor for a morning trolling session along Esperanza Reef, one of North Vancouver Island’s most productive pieces of structure.

Big water, heavy gear, and aggressive bottom fish — this is West Coast fishing at its finest.

Fishing in One of Canada’s Smallest Towns (Part 2 – Zeballos Lodge)

On Day 2 of our trip to Reel Obsession Fishing Resort in Zeballos, we set our sights on one of the most hard-hitting species on the Pacific coast — Lingcod.

Fishing out of Esperanza Inlet on North Vancouver Island gives anglers quick access to serious structure, and Esperanza Reef is no exception. Steep drop-offs, rocky pinnacles, and bait-rich water make it prime territory for big, aggressive lingcod.

Trolling for Lingcod on the West Coast

While many anglers jig for lingcod, this morning was all about trolling structure along the reef. Covering water allows you to locate active fish and dial in productive zones quickly — especially when fishing expansive reef systems like this one.

Owner Adrian O’Connor brings local knowledge that only comes from years on the water. Knowing where the reef rises, how current pushes bait, and which depths consistently hold fish makes all the difference.

The result? Hard hits, heavy head shakes, and classic West Coast bottom fishing action.

Why Zeballos Is So Productive

Zeballos may be one of Canada’s smallest villages, but the surrounding water is anything but small. The nutrient-rich Pacific currents that feed Esperanza Inlet create ideal habitat for salmon, halibut, rockfish, and lingcod.

Minimal boat pressure and short runs to the fishing grounds make it an efficient and exciting place to fish. You’re into structure quickly — and when you’re on structure, you’re in the game.

The Reel Obsession Experience

Reel Obsession Fishing Resort blends comfort with serious angling opportunity. Whether it’s salmon offshore or lingcod on the reef, every day offers something different.

Day 2 proved that when you mix good company, proven structure, and aggressive bottom fish, you get an unforgettable morning on the water.
