There’s nothing better than crisp mountain air, clear flowing water, and watching a wild rainbow rise to a perfectly presented fly. This trip was all about good drifts, solid hooksets, and even better company.
On the river with Richard Wilby of Spitfire Tackle / Four Salt / Forged Fishing and Jamie Bell of Northwestern Sport Fishing, it was one of those days where the laughs were constant and the fish kept us honest. Sharing water with passionate anglers who live and breathe the sport just makes every take that much sweeter.
Spring chrome, tight lines, and friends who know their craft — that’s what it’s all about.

Fishing on the Elk River in Canada B.C.
Spring in British Columbia means it’s time to chase Rainbow Trout on the Elk River. Once the river settles down from winter and the flows level out, those rainbows start feeding hard. If you put a good fly in the right spot, they’ll eat — and they fight.
On this trip, we hit the water with a couple good buddies — Richard Wilby from Spitfire Tackle, Four Salt, and Forged Fishing, and Jamie Bell from Northwestern Sport Fishing. When you’ve got experienced anglers on a river like the Elk, it’s pretty much guaranteed you’re going to have a solid day.
Why Spring Is So Good on the Elk
The Elk River has a strong population of wild Rainbow Trout and Westslope Cutthroat, and spring is one of the best times to fish it. The water temps are right, bugs are starting to move, and the fish are hungry after winter.
A Good Day on the River
This one wasn’t about limits or numbers. It was about making good drifts, dialing in flies, sticking a few quality fish, and having some laughs in between.
If you’ve never fished the Elk River in the spring, it’s worth putting on your list. Healthy wild fish, easy access, and plenty of opportunity if you put the work in.
