Episode 3: Winter Chinook Salmon & Crab Fishing on the Sunshine Coast
In this episode of Connect Fishing Experiences, we set out from Powell River’s North Harbor for a short but action-packed day on the Sunshine Coast, BC. With calm October weather, gorgeous scenery, and a pod of whales nearby, it's the perfect day for a local fishing session.
We drop crab traps in search of Dungeness, and run classic anchovy and hoochie setups to target winter Chinook salmon—also known as feeder springs. Between successful catches, near-misses, and great conversation, it’s a showcase of what makes this region a fishing paradise.
Crab and Winter Chinook Fishing in Powell River | Sunshine Coast
On a beautiful October morning, we head out from Powell River’s North Harbor to enjoy one of the many perks of Sunshine Coast living—spontaneous access to world-class fishing.
After dropping our crab gear, we run a mix of anchovy teaser rigs and glow hoochies to chase feeder Chinook salmon, also called winter springs. With the tide moving and gear dialed in, we land multiple fish and bring one hatchery keeper to the boat.
Whales, Weather, and West Coast Vibes
We’re treated to an unforgettable show from nearby whales, followed by calm seas and consistent action near Harwood Island and Coho Point. After a half-dozen salmon encounters and a pot full of crab, we call it a wrap—reminded again why the Sunshine Coast is such a gem for local anglers.
